The A's went 1-5 during week #4, and concluded the month of April with a record of 11-14. The Athletics will move into the month of May sitting tied for 3rd place with the Rangers and 5 games back of the 1st place Astros.
In this article, I will discuss the additions I made to my Rank(30) tab of my BaseballSavant Excel spreadsheet, notable players who excelled and struggled in terms of BAHP last week, and what the A's have to look forward to in week #5.
The Rank(30) tab represents my Rankings of all MLB hitters in terms of BAHP with at least 30 batted ball events. I also added K% to my Rank(30) tab because I think it's important to note the amount a batter strikes out. Although BAHP is a great way to evaluate a player's performance based on their contact with the ball, I also want to implement K% and BB% into my stat, eventually. I am not quite sure how to implement these non-batted ball events into BAHP, but that will be a project for me next week. I also have been manually inputting the date for each batted ball event. However, I just started on (4/26) and I'll have to go back and somehow enter in all the dates from Opening Day til then. When I copy and paste my data from Baseball Savant, the date is not copied in the process. I also have a Rank(20) tab which contains all the hitter data with at least 20 batted ball events up until last Sunday.
Some notable players who had excellent weeks were:
Russell Martin went from a rank of #259, with 0.240 BAHP to Rank #102, with 0.359 BAHP. That's a 0.119 or 11.9% increase in BAHP in one week. Martin, in limited ABs, went 7/15 (.467) with 3 runs scored, 2 home runs, and 4 rbis last week.
Anthony Rendon, thanks to his Godly 6/6 3 homer and 10 RBI performance on Sunday, had the second largest BAHP increase. He went from a rank of #266, with 0.225 BAHP to Rank #151, with 0.330 BAHP for a 0.105 increase or 10.5%. In the Box Score, Rendon went 11/25 (.440) with 8 runs scored, 3 home runs, and 11 rbis last week.
On the flip side, Jackie Bradley Jr. fell from a rank of #5, with 0.500 BAHP, to Rank #82, with 0.371 BAHP. That is a -0.129 or -12.9% decrease in BAHP. Jackie is trying to bounce back from a right knee injury which put him on the DL on April 21st.
Also, Willson Contreras fell from a rank of #21, with 0.455 BAHP, to Rank #83, with 0.371 BAHP. That is a -0.084 or 8.4% decrease in BAHP. Contreras went 2/14 (.118) and is posting a dismal 29.2% strikeout percentage.
Oh the A's... The A's only had 15 BBE with a HP% greater than or equal to 75% the entire week. They averaged 2.5, 75%+ Hits per game. That's really bad. Anyone who watched any of the A's games this past week could tell you their biggest issue - strikeouts. Everyone except for Lowrie, Joyce, and Phegley are striking out at a higher rate than their projected strikeout percentages by ZIPS. This data is displayed in the OAK tab of the spreadsheet below. We should expect the A's bats to come alive this week, specifically Vogt and Joyce because they are making contact around league average (0.340) in terms of BAHP, and their strikeout percentages are fair. I was able to determine that (0.340) is what I would consider league average for BAHP. I took the mean from a sample of 263 players with at least 30 batted ball events to determine this value. All of my calculations and data will be attached in the link below, specifically the Rank(30) tab.
The A's will have an off-day on Monday, and will play their next series in Minnesota starting on Tuesday. After a 3 game set with the Twinkies, they will head home and face the ferocious Detroit Tigers starting on Friday. Pitching Probables are as follows:
Game #26 (5/2) Probable Starters: Sonny Gray** vs. Ervin Santana
Game #27 (5/3) Probable Starters: Kendall Graveman vs. Hector Santiago
Game #28 (5/4) Probable Starters: Jharel Cotton vs. Kyle Gibson
Game #29 (5/5) Probable Starters: Jordan Zimmermann vs. Andrew Triggs
Game #30 (5/6) Probable Starters: Daniel Norris vs. Jesse Hahn
Game #31 (5/7) Probable Starters: Justin Verlander vs. Sonny Gray
** Sonny Gray will make his 2017 debut upon returning from the DL due to a right lat strain
